Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author, poet, and critic. In 1834 Poe married his cousin Virginia, who was not quite fourteen at the time, and began seriously seeking a means of supporting "his family." In 1877, James Whitcomb Riley and John Oscar Henderson, editor of the Kokomo Dispatch, published a poem they claimed was written by Edgar Allen Poe. The poem was actually written by Riley, who wanted to play a joke on his detractors. The hoax ran for a considerable time before it was exposed, and continued to pop up throughout Riley's lifetime.
